Weathering with You Plot Overview
The story follows Hodaka Morishima, a 16-year-old boy who runs away from his rural home to Tokyo, escaping personal struggles and searching for a new life. As he navigates the city, which is continuously soaked by torrential rains, Hodaka meets Keisuke Suga, who offers him a job at a small publishing company. They investigate urban legends and occult topics, including stories of “sunshine girls” who can control the weather.
Hodaka soon befriends Hina Amano, a kind-hearted girl who works at a fast-food restaurant. Hina reveals to Hodaka that she has the mysterious ability to stop the rain and bring sunshine, making her a “weather maiden.” Seeing how Hina and her younger brother Nagi struggle financially, Hodaka suggests they start a business, using her power to clear the weather for various events. Their venture brings them brief success as they bring joy to people by stopping the rain for weddings, festivals, and more.
However, the more Hina uses her powers, the heavier the cost becomes. Her body starts to disappear, and she learns that the ability to control the weather requires an ultimate sacrifice — her own life. Meanwhile, Hodaka’s past catches up with him as the police track him down, having been reported missing by his family. As the rain intensifies, a state of emergency is declared in Tokyo, and the authorities try to separate Hina and Nagi, as they are minors living without guardians.
Realizing that he has fallen in love with Hina, Hodaka refuses to let her sacrifice herself for the sake of Tokyo’s weather. With the help of his boss Suga and Natsumi, Hodaka races to the shrine where Hina first gained her powers. At the shrine, Hodaka leaps into the sky to bring Hina back, convincing her to choose her own happiness over her duties as a weather maiden. As they return, the rain resumes and Tokyo continues to flood.
Weathering with You Ending and Themes:
Three years later, Hodaka returns to Tokyo after completing his probation. Much of the city is submerged in water due to the continuous rain. Despite the consequences, Hodaka searches for Hina, believing that their decision to live for themselves rather than for the weather was the right one. The film concludes with Hodaka and Hina reuniting, promising to face the future together despite the altered world around them.
