The Apothecary Diaries season 1 Review
“The Apothecary Diaries” is a mystery anime set in 15th-century China. The anime has two seasons. A recap of the first part of “The Apothecary Diaries” is available. The second part will be released on January 6, 2024!
So far, we know that Maomao, a common girl with an amazing mind, lives with her adoptive father, Luomen. She followed in his footsteps and has great knowledge of medicine.
Our protagonist, Maomao, was gathering herbs from her garden when her father instructed her to deliver medicine to the Verdigris house. He warned her to be cautious as there were frequent kidnappings of girls in the town. Despite the warning, she was kidnapped and sold to the emperor’s Eastern palace which housed his most favored concubines. At the palace, Maomao worked as a maidservant, performing menial tasks such as laundry and changing sheets. She was grateful for the salary she received, even though her kidnappers claimed a large part of it. To ensure she was paid less, Maomao did not reveal that she was educated, causing her kidnappers to lose out on potential earnings.
In the palace, two of the emperor’s heirs are born, each suffering from an illness rumored to be a curse.
Maomao suspects that the babies’ illness is due to poisoning and cleverly leaves a clue to help cure them. Her sneaky actions are discovered by the palace manager, Jinshi. As a result, Maomao is promoted to the position of Lady-in-waiting for the emperor’s consort, Lady Gyokuyou, where she serves as a poison taster.
This episode of The Apothecary Diary introduces Mamao to the Jade Palace in her newly appointed status. She is a unique lady, known for her expertise in medicine and her apothecary profession.
Maomao loves her job because it allows her to follow her passion and taste-test delicious food for poison detection. While she is touring the palace, the other attendants of Lady Gyokuyou notice Maomao’s bandaged hand, where she tests poison and remedies, and assume that she comes from an abusive family. Feeling pity for her, they promise to take extra care of her.
In the next scene, a mystery unfolds: soldiers are dying in a camp due to food poisoning. Jinshi calls Maomao to evaluate the situation. Maomao suspects that using branches of certain plants as chopsticks can act as poison when these branches are heated. Her predictions saved an innocent chef in the soldier camp.
This episode also reveals Jinshi’s true occupation: eliminating disloyal servants and maintaining control over everyone.
Maomao is an exceptional employee; she creates a stimulant for loved ones as requested by Jinshi, proving her importance at the palace.
In the third episode of The Apothecary Diaries, the story unfolds with a captivating blend of mystery and gossip. Maomao finds herself at the center of intrigue when she catches wind of rumors about a ghostly figure dancing on the walls of the Eastern Palace at night. Eager to uncover the truth, Maomao consults Jinshi and his eunuch, leading her to an unexpected encounter with concubine Fuyou.
As the plot thickens, it is revealed that Fuyou, soon to be presented to a soldier, once possessed remarkable dancing prowess. However, a fateful misstep during a performance for the emperor has resulted in the absence of any visits from him. Suspicion grows as Maomao begins to suspect that Lady Fuyou may be suffering from a condition known as Somnambulism, wherein the afflicted individual exhibits entirely different behavior at night while having no memory of these nocturnal escapades. The intricacies of the characters and their enigmatic connections continue to draw the audience deeper into the intriguing world of The Apothecary Diaries.
She suspects that Lady Fuyou was faking her illness. She gave an example of a similar case involving a lady in a brothel. After presenting her case to Jinshi, she discovered that concubine Fuyou was later prohibited from leaving her residence until her bestowment.
The apothecary discussed her speculations about the sudden onset of Lady’s disease with Lady Gyokuyou. Fuyou was in love with her childhood friend (the soldier), and to remain chaste for her love, she purposefully botched her performance. Judging from the relieved expression of concubine Fuyou upon her departure, Maomao’s speculations were spot on.
The emperor’s words are considered divine, and denial of them could result in execution. The emperor sought Maomao’s help to cure Lady Lihua’s worsening illness at the Jade Pavilion.
In this episode of The Apothecary Diaries, we learn only a little about the emperor, apart from the fact that his orders are absolute. Despite following the emperor’s orders, Maomao was unwelcome to Lady Lihua’s attendants because she was Lady Gyokuyou’s attendant.
With Jinshi’s assistance, Maomao gains access to Lady Lihua and discovers the cause of her persistent illness: the toxic face powder banned for use.
After the reason behind the incident was discovered, concubine Lihua’s lady-in-waiting, who was responsible for her presentation, was subjected to house arrest as a form of punishment. At the same time, Maomao dedicated herself to creating a detailed and comprehensive diet and care regimen for Lady Lihua, demonstrating great dedication and effort in her duties. In two months, Lady Lihua recovered enough to walk around the palace.
Maomao taught Lady Lihua a technique from her big sister at the brothel to attract and lure the emperor to her dwelling before returning to Jade Palace.
As anticipated by Maomao, the frequency of the emperor’s visits to Lady Lihua escalated as time passed.
Maomao’s day began with a startling rumor about the stimulants she had created. Her friend informed her that the stimulants had been used to seduce a eunuch who was notorious for his aversion to women.
In the upcoming scene of The Apothecary Diary, a new mystery unfolds. A man approaches Maomao, seeking a cure for a curse. While carrying out his usual task of burning the trash, he discovered wooden tablets, which he burned as usual. However, he later noticed a severe rash on his hands, coinciding with a change in the color of the flames.
In the upcoming scene, the preparations for the garden party begin with the emperor and all the higher-ups gathering at the court garden to enjoy performances and meals. The emperor, who was unmarried and had no consorts, was to be accompanied by the four highest-status concubines.
Maomao is intelligent and anticipates the windy and cold weather, so she prepares orange ginger candy and insulated clothing to keep warm stones in, to avoid catching a cold.
Upon meeting Maomao at the event, we discover that her freckles are not real. She uses them as a way to deflect attention from herself. Maomao confides in Jinshi about her kidnapping experience, and he proceeds to give her a promised hairpin. Everything unfolds smoothly at the garden party until the food is served.
As the garden party continues, Maomao learns that hairpins have different meanings. The hairpins are used to recruit talented people at parties like these, but they symbolize promise and love.
Maomao is given a courtesy hairpin Lihaku and Lady Lihua. Due to Maomao’s hairpin collections, Lady Gyokuyou’s attendants suspect she might get angry and act possessively.
In the next scene, the lunch is served. And Maomao gets to do her favorite job, poison testing.
As the soup is served, Maomao’s expressions change to the feeling of pleasure and ecstasy, leaving observers in awe and imagining how delicious the food might have been. The concubine’s soup is poisoned.
Jinshi and Maomao carry out investigations and request to meet young Lady Lishu. They discover that Lady Lishu is allergic to seafood, leading to rashes on her arm. Lady Lishu is allergic to mackerel. Her attendant was responsible for not letting the allergy-triggering food be served. Maomao warns Lishu’s lady-in-waiting that this mistake can hold her accountable for poisoning the emperor’s concubine.
This episode of The Apothecary Diaries begins with a flashback of Maomao and her grandfather in the forest, collecting medicine.
Maomao was uncomfortable showing up to work without her freckles, so she asked Lady Gyokuyou to keep wearing them. The Lady agreed, considering her high demand as Lady-in-attending, so she decided to keep Maomao’s freckles.
In the next scene, Gaoshun and Maomao examine the bowl that was used to serve the poisonous soup. They find fingerprints on the bowl using powder and cotton. This could help identify the person or people who handled the bowl.
A third party who touched the rim of the bowl is suspected of poisoning it. The intended target was Lady Lishu, but her bowl was accidentally swapped with Lady Gyoukuyou’s, causing the plan to fail. The question remains: Who attempted to poison Lady Lishu?
In the next scene, Maomao learns a new use for hairpins: they can be used as a token to temporarily escape the palace, allowing her to visit home. She convinced Lihaku to accompany her to her town, and in exchange, he would be treated generously by her sisters at the luxurious brothel, The Verdigris House. She returns home, visits her father, and talks to him until dark.
This episode begins with a hectic morning in The Apothecary Diaries. Maomao is escorted to the brothel by a young girl, where she rescues a well-dressed man and a courtesan.
The next scene unfolds smoothly until Maomao catches a little girl trying to kill a man at the brothel. She discovers that the man is the spoiled son of a rich merchant who lures courtesans to him with sweet words and then abandons them when he gets bored.
Maomao later solves the mystery of the scene. The courtesans used an elaborate plan to murder the merchant’s son using two methods: alcohol and tobacco.
The lower-density alcohol floats on top of the higher-density alcohol. The courtesan sipped the lighter alcohol using a straw, while the man drank both layers of alcohol that interacted with the tobacco. To ensure she wouldn’t be suspected of murder, the courtesan consumed only a small amount of the top layer of alcohol.
In the next scene, Maomao returns to the palace. Jinshi is upset that she used Lihaku’s obligatory pin instead of his hairpin. Jinshi interprets a different meaning and gets traumatized when Maomao tells him she paid Lihaku a night of his dream.
In this episode of The Apothecary Diaries, Jinshi discovers that a high-ranking official, Kounen, died from alcohol poisoning. He asks Maomao to investigate the true cause of his death. The bottle of alcohol that Kounen drank from was accidentally knocked over, so it couldn’t be examined for poison. Maomao decides to taste the same type of alcohol to gain insight into Kounen’s death. She discovers that Kounen drank a peculiar mixture of sweet and salty alcohol.
Upon closer examination, Maomao finds a broken alcohol bottle with dried salt residue on the inside, indicating that Kounen died from a salt overdose. As it turns out, Kounen never added salt to his drink because he had lost his sense of taste due to an illness.
In the next scene, a new mystery unfolds: the guards discover the body of a kitchen maid, and Jinshi wants Maomao to uncover the truth behind her death. Maomao’s theories about the maid’s death prompted her to make a strange request to Jinshi. Maomao asks to be executed by poisoning if she is charged with an unexpected crime.
Jinshi and Maomao discuss the unresolved poisoning attempt on Lady Lishu in episode 6 of The Apothecary Diaries, which was coupled with the suicide of a young maid. Jinshi suspects that the maid who committed suicide is the same person who attempted to poison the concubines. To confirm his theory, he sends Maomao to Lady Ah-duo’s Garnet Pavilion to conduct an investigation. Maomao initially mistook Lady Ah-Duo for Jinshi due to their similar masculine features.
After returning from the Garget Pavilion, Maomao discusses her experience with Jinshi. Something clicked, and she scheduled a meeting with Lady Lishu. During their conversation, Maomao learns about Lady Lishu’s aversion to honey, which stems from her wet nurse forbidding her from using honey when she got sick as a child. When Maomao asks about Lady Lishu’s interaction with the Lady-in-waiting of Garnet Pavilion, Ms. Fuming, she notices a noticeable change in Lady Lishu’s expression.
After chatting with Maomao and the lady-in-waiting, Ms. Fuming reveals that Lady Ah-Duo will soon leave the Garnet Pavilion to make room for another high-ranking concubine because Lady Ah-Duo cannot have children anymore.
Digging into the past, Lady Ah-Duo’s baby was born on the same day as the empress’s child, but her child wasn’t given priority, resulting in the loss of her uterus.
We understand that the essence of certain flowers is poisonous. When flowers like Aconite and azalea are mixed with honey, they create a poisonous mixture. If Maomao’s assumptions are correct, Ms. Fuming unintentionally gave Lady Ah-Dou’s baby honey infused with the essence of such flowers, resulting in the passing of Ah-Duo’s baby.
When the dots connect, it is revealed that Ms. Fuming attempted to poison Lady Lishu to prevent her from meeting Lady Ah-duo. This revelation exposes the dangers of consuming honey as a disguise, uncovering Ms. Fuming’s deceit.
The next scene unfolded with the completion of Ms. Fuming’s execution. Maomao is seen sharing a drink with Lady Ah-duo, mourning the loss of her maid and Lady-in-waiting. The next morning, Lady Ah-duo relinquished her crown and left the Garnet Pavilion. However, Maomao suspects that her deceased baby might still be alive.
After Ms. Fuming was executed, her relatives were robbed of their wealth and each sentenced to different degrees of corporal punishment. However, Ah-Duo was not questioned for her actions.
In episode 12 of The Apothecary Diaries, Jinshi is seen sitting with a list of eighty people who are about to be laid off because they were involved in various businesses with Fuming’s family. The kidnapping of Maomao and her subsequent sale to the palace were also linked to Fuming’s family, which ultimately led to Maomao being fired.
After being laid off, Maomao began working with the old lady as a junior courtesan who only entertained the guests. The group of top courtesans was summoned to an event hosted by the nobility.
At the Nobel event, Maomao finds Jinshi sulking alone in a corner. When he sees Maomao, his energy seems to return, and they chat about each other’s lives. Maomao’s sisters from the brothel witness their cute interaction and giggle among themselves.
A few days later, Jisnhi visits the brothel with enough money to make the old woman happy and a rare herb to make Maomao happy. He wishes to take one girl from the brothel.
