Deadman Wonderland (Season 1 + OVA) Review
Here’s a detailed episode-by-episode explanation of Deadman Wonderland, an anime based on the manga of the same name. The series follows Ganta Igarashi, a young boy who is falsely accused of murdering his entire class and is sent to a bizarre, brutal prison called Deadman Wonderland. The anime aired in 2011 and consists of 12 episodes and an OVA. Here’s a breakdown of the episodes:
Episode 1: “Death Row Inmate”
Ganta Igarashi, a seemingly normal middle school student, witnesses the massacre of his entire class by a mysterious figure clad in red, known as the Red Man. Ganta is framed for the crime and sentenced to death in Deadman Wonderland, a privately run prison/theme park where inmates entertain visitors in deadly games. Upon arrival, Ganta realizes the prison is a dangerous and corrupt place. During his stay, Ganta awakens a mysterious ability called the Branch of Sin, which allows him to control his blood as a weapon. He also meets Shiro, an eccentric albino girl who seems to know him.
Episode 2: “Antidote (Candy)”
Ganta learns about the prison’s cruel system. To survive, inmates must earn Cast Points by participating in deadly games, which they can use to buy necessities like food and medicine. He discovers that he needs candy (laced with a special antidote) to neutralize the poison in his collar, which is slowly killing him. Ganta participates in a deadly obstacle course to win Cast Points, but the event is rigged against him. With Shiro’s unexpected help, he survives.
Episode 3: “G Block”
After encountering a fellow inmate, Yoh Takami, Ganta learns about G Block, a hidden section of the prison rumored to house special inmates. Yoh offers to help Ganta in exchange for Cast Points. Ganta begins investigating G Block in the hopes of finding the Red Man, who he believes is connected to the prison.
Episode 4: “Crow Claw”
Ganta discovers the horrifying truth about G Block—it’s where “Deadmen” like him, who have the Branch of Sin ability, are held. He meets Senji Kiyomasa, also known as Crow, another Deadman who forces him into a deadly duel called a Carnival Corpse. These battles pit Deadmen against each other for the entertainment of wealthy spectators. Although inexperienced, Ganta manages to defeat Crow by discovering new ways to use his blood weapon.
Episode 5: “Carrion Festival”
Ganta continues to explore his powers and learns about the true nature of Carnival Corpse. After winning, he is horrified to discover that losers face mutilation or worse. Shiro becomes more involved in his life, offering both comfort and confusion. Meanwhile, the sinister director of Deadman Wonderland, Tsunenaga Tamaki, manipulates events from behind the scenes.
Episode 6: “Hummingbird”
Ganta meets Minatsuki Takami, another Deadman who appears to be a victim of abuse. She befriends Ganta and tricks him into sympathizing with her. However, during a Carnival Corpse battle, Minatsuki reveals her sadistic personality and uses her Branch of Sin to attack Ganta. Despite her deception, Ganta manages to win the fight and spares her life. Yoh, who turns out to be Minatsuki’s brother, helps Ganta but hides his own motives.
Episode 7: “Wretched Egg”
Shiro’s strange behavior begins to raise questions. Ganta learns more about the Wretched Egg, a powerful and dangerous entity connected to the Red Man. Tamaki continues to scheme, using Deadmen as pawns in his plans. Ganta starts to suspect that Deadman Wonderland holds darker secrets than he initially thought.
Episode 8: “Scar Chain”
Ganta is approached by a resistance group within the prison called Scar Chain, led by Nagi Kengamine. They seek to expose the truth about Deadman Wonderland and overthrow its corrupt leadership. Ganta joins the group, hoping to escape and reveal his innocence. However, the group’s plans are thwarted by Tamaki, who sends his enforcers to crush the rebellion.
Episode 9: “Pro-Ops”
Scar Chain attempts to smuggle out crucial data about Deadman Wonderland’s corruption. Ganta and the others face brutal opposition from prison guards and Deadmen loyal to Tamaki. The plan nearly succeeds, but betrayal within the group leads to tragedy. Nagi’s backstory is revealed, showcasing the sacrifices he’s made for the resistance.
Episode 10: “Undertaker”
Ganta encounters the Undertakers, a group of elite enforcers equipped with technology that neutralizes Deadmen’s powers. Ganta struggles against Genkaku, a sadistic Undertaker who takes pleasure in tormenting others. The episode highlights the increasing desperation of Ganta and his allies as they face overwhelming odds.
Episode 11: “GIG of Despair”
As Ganta confronts his growing doubts about his ability to fight, he is pushed to his limits by Genkaku. Shiro, whose mysterious origins are hinted at, intervenes in the battle in unexpected ways. Ganta begins to question who Shiro truly is and her connection to the Wretched Egg.
Episode 12: “Grateful Deadman”
The season concludes with Ganta finally confronting his feelings of guilt, anger, and vengeance. He resolves to become stronger and uncover the truth about the Wretched Egg and the Red Man. Although the resistance is weakened, Ganta’s determination inspires hope. However, many questions remain unanswered, leaving the story open-ended.
OVA: “Red Knife Wielder”
The OVA serves as a prequel to the series, focusing on Senji Kiyomasa’s past as a police officer before he became a Deadman. The episode provides insight into his personality and motivations, adding depth to his character.
